Protect Your Right to Vote on Local Sales Tax Hikes in Ramsey County PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 30 August 2011 16:24

Today, right now, is one of the few opportunities you will ever have to make as strong an impact on taxes and your right to vote in Ramsey County .

The Ramsey County Charter Commission has a meeting scheduled for next Wednesday (August 31) to vote on amending the Ramsey County Charter in order to ensure the people will get to vote on whether they want the sales tax raised for funding a Vikings stadium.

In 2006, the state legislature voted to allow the Hennepin County commissioners to suspend the right of the citizens to vote on whether or not to raise sales taxes to build the Twins Stadium – a tax imposed only on the residents of Hennepin County .

Just to be clear, the vote next Wednesday will be to begin the process that will place the Amendment on the November 2012 ballot, allowing voters to decide the sales tax issue then.

Take Action:

Call the members of the charter commission and tell them to ensure that the right of the citizens of Ramsey County to vote on a tax increase to fund a stadium must be preserved.

Just make the point that the Charter Commission has a duty to let the people vote and by approving the Amendment, he or she will be supporting Ramsey County .

The Charter Commission meeting will be held on Wednesday night, August 31st, 125 Charles Ave , near Rice Street .  While it is a closed hearing (in that no public testimony will be heard), the public is welcome to observe, and are encouraged to attend.

Our Main Goals

  • Protect the integrity of the vote through a photo I.D. requirement at the polls.

  • Stop Instant Runoff Voting (IRV).  Despite proponent claims and media reports,  the recent Supreme Court  ruling DID NOT declare IRV to be constitutional.

  • Promote the preservation of our right to elect our Judges, which is now being threatened.

  • Restore partisan-basis municipal elections so each party can be represented.

We need to stop the erosion of our franchise rights.

Our surveys show that most voters said they had virtually "no clue" who they voted for in various municipal, school district and judicial elections.

Photo ID Support

Andrew Young“I support a photo ID requirement. ... Requiring one and giving it free of charge gives those at the poverty level a tool that enables them to independently participate in the economic process and the election process.”

- Andrew Young, former US State Rep, GA; Atlanta mayor and United States Ambassador

Voter Protection Pledge

"I pledge to the voters of the State of Minnesota that I will support all efforts to institute a requirement to show photo I.D. to access a ballot in any election for public office in the state."

The Minnesota Voters Alliance is sponsoring an initiative to request all 490 statewide candidates sign the above pledge to protect voters and the integrity of elections. (See current tally)
